A New Season and a New Era

Morning all,

Another morning passes without a defensive reinforcement added to the squad but there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. That tunnel’s end is in sight and I predict it will only take 3 days to get there. The premier league is (hopefully) ready to kick off this weekend and as such I am ecstatic as a fat person in a cake shop.

Every summer I feel strange. I feel as though there is an empty void in my life which is finally going to be filled this week. Not only is it the actual football but everything that goes with it. The trips to Holloway Road and drinking shit beer in The Bailey, mmm heaven. As well as, all the pub talk which makes being friends much easier. I don’t know about anyone else out there but I find that with football to talk about, potentially awkward moments with people you don’t particularly like are far easier. It is fair to say that the football season makes my limited social skills less apparent so I am giddy with excitement at the moment.

Going away is the negativity that permeated my entire being and is slowly being replaced by my usual optimism that fills me at this stage of the season. I also see light at the end of the tunnel regarding many of our current situations plaguing us. I see the debacles of Nasri and Cesc finally coming to a conclusion soon one way or another. I doubt their inclusions in the Champions League squad are anything other than symbolic especially given an “injury/fitness issue” and “suspension” and by the second leg I would imagine that these will be over. A line drawn under the mess and we can all finally move on.

So with the dust settled on the transfer of Chamberlain we are starting to get some more positivity amongst the fans which is great. Also there are murmurings that we are very close on a couple of players with one of them being a much heralded centre back we are all clamouring for. I can’t say who it is for I genuinely do not know but Cahill’s name keeps getting thrown about but at this point I doubt any of it is actually based on fact. So we shall see.

The other thing I’d like to touch on today is the successful work permit application for Ryo Miyachi. Another super quick player on the wings taking that to four this season which is something we haven’t had in a while. Hopefully this can take us back to a more direct style of play with faster attacks, more penetration and something less predictable. These “young” players may actually do a job far sooner than we thought and could represent a much needed “plan B” or even a new “plan A”. With Nasri being replaced by sheer pace that is certainly going to change the dynamic of the team so it is whether Arshavin continues to be deployed on the wing or if he starts playing in his preferred position in the centre in an advanced position. Either way it provides more options then we’ve had in recent seasons. Even though it can be argued that the quality may not be as high or heaven forbid we are even less experienced but these wingers are the likely replacements for Nasri, like it or not.

But the season is nigh and as a result we should be looking forward not back. So let’s hope to another productive couple of days until the season starts.

As a final note, please enter the Goonerverse.co.uk competition. If you enter the Goonerverse fantasy league before the start of the season you have a chance to win an Arsenal T-shirt. Not much but it’s something eh? All you need to do is join the premier league fantasy league at fantasy.premierleague.com and create your team. Then just join a private league using the code: 1304241-293592. Good luck!

Oh yeah… Happy Birthday to my Poppa bear. Enjoy it old man!
Until tomorrow!
